AUBURN - Auburn University has received permission to interview University of Buffalo coach Turner Gill, who will complete this season as one of only three black head coaches in major-college football.

The interview was requested Friday and reported by the Buffalo News on Saturday. A person close to the Auburn coaching search told The Birmingham News on Saturday night the interview has been arranged.

Gill will come into the interview on a hot streak. His team beat No. 14 Ball State to win the Mid-American Conference championship on Friday night. Buffalo is 8-5 this season and Gill is 15-21 in three seasons as a head coach. His losing record is misleading: He inherited one of the worst programs in Division I-A football in 2006. Buffalo won five conference games in 2007 after winning just eight conference games in the eight previous seasons.
